Free round trip flight to Boston (for my wife)

When I found out that my wife had an upcoming business conference in Boston to attend, the first thing I did was to try to find the best redemption of miles to pay for her flights.

I checked my usual airline carriers: American, United, and Southwest.  I found that American Airlines offered the best value for the flights she wanted to take.  This was great because we have a ton of American Airlines AAdvantage miles.

Los Angeles to Boston

The cheapest award redemption that I could find was 12,500 American Airlines AAdvantage miles and $5.60 for taxes and fees to fly from LAX to BOS.  If we were to book this flight on AA.com, it would cost $208 for the cheapest rate online.  This was cheaper than flights found on kayak.com, where the lowest cash rate would be $365.

Boston to Los Angeles

The cheapest award redemption that I could find was 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles and $5.60 for taxes and fees to fly from LAX to BOS.  If we were to book this flight on AA.com, it would cost us $347 for the cheapest rate online.  This rate was cheaper than flights found on kayak.com, where the lowest cash rate would be $365.

Our total savings
By redeeming our miles for these flights, we saved a total of $543.80 (after deducting fees) on plane tickets by using 42,500 American Airlines miles.  This cost us quite a bit of miles for domestic flights.  Just last month, we booked 2 one-way tickets from Los Angeles to Tokyo for only 50,000 AAdvantage miles.

We have no regrets with this award redemption; we would rather pay for a flight with miles instead of cash any day.  Paying for flights with our airline miles really help us save for our financial freedom.  We don’t try to hoard our miles: we earn them and then burn them.
